ELD mandate to go live April 1, 2018
On April 1, 2018 the new ELD Mandate (Electronic Log Device) for truckers will become fully implemented. In the past, truckers kept paper logs of hours driven, but now are required to use ELD to record these hours. An ELD is a device that attaches to a commercial motor vehicle to record Hours of Service (HOS), or hours driven. The ELD will automatically record driving time and monitor information such as location, engine hours, vehicle movement, and miles driven. Essentially, all commercial vehicle carriers that operate across state lines will be impacted. Additionally, any driver who maintains 8 or more days’ worth of duty status logs, out of 30 days, will require an ELD. It is expected that the use of these devices will increase transit times and cause inland trucking rates to rise. Sumisho Global Logistics is closely following the situation and will update any further impact to our customers.
